Social Media Optimization (SMO) ? It's About the Traffic! | Social …

You may have heard on the national television media recently about the wide spread coverage of the race to 1 million Twitter followers between Ashton Kutcher and CNN. Even more recently talk show hosts like Oprah and Ellen DeGeneres have begun to see the value of using Social Media. One could easily take away from all of this national press coverage that Social Media is only about the numbers and that you have to be a ?celebrity? to get in on it. But in my opinion, it?s no. There are very good reasons for Small Business Owners to spend the time, energy and money to get involved on Social Media web sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, Twitter and YouTube. For a Small Business Owner using Social Media should be about enhancing your marketing by taking it to the next level and helping you sell more by driving ?qualified? visitor traffic back to your website.

In the midst of all of the national media frenzy over ?quantity? of connections or followers, I find myself starting to think that Twitter and Social Media in general may be starting to lose the essence of what made it cool to use; a way to connect in an online social setting with people that you have an affinity with, to expand your reach and influence beyond your local markets using the Internet. Don?t get me wrong, I think it is great that people are connecting with each other and using Social Media tools because that is what it is all about. However, I feel strongly that it?s not a good idea for people to start chasing followers just to have followers or start to use Twitter or any other Social Media website just because it is the ?IN? thing to do. I believe that by doing so they may start to lose that sense of individual and group connectivity or ?quality? that attracted everyone to Social Media in the first place.

So, in the midst of all of this media frenzy you may have heard or gleaned that you should establish a Social Media marketing strategy. What you may not be hearing is why? I know that what I?m not hearing is that an effective Social Media Optimization (SMO)* strategy should be all about increasing your website visitor traffic and helping you sell more. Why else would a Small Business Owner invest all of that time, energy and money? Right? But, you have to be subtle about it and you should be a giver, not a taker?

As you may already know, Social Media Optimization (SMO) is a set of strategies for generating publicity, creating viral marketing and increasing incoming website visitor traffic by using existing social media, online communities and social networking websites. Methods of SMO include adding RSS feeds, social news buttons, blogging, and incorporating third-party community functionalities like images and videos into your website.

SMO is related to Search Engine Marketing (SEM), but differs in several ways, primarily because the focus is on creating website visitor traffic from sources other than search engines. Improved Search Engine Results Page (SERP) rankings and higher Google Page Rank could also be benefits of a successful SMO strategy. This is very important to Small Business Owners because if you don?t show up on Page One of a Google, Yahoo or MSN-Bing search then 90% of the people who are interested in the contents of your website may never find it or you. Plus from my experience the number one organic (non-paid) search engine result listing tends to get 40-50% of the click thus to their website from that potential buyer?s Internet topic search.

Additionally, Social Media Optimization is sometimes related to viral marketing where word of mouth is created not through friends or family but through a presence on social media, social networking, social bookmarking, video and photo sharing websites. In a similar way posting blogs achieves the same effect by sharing content through the use of RSS Feeds in the blogosphere and special blog search engines and directories. For most owners blogging could be a natural fit for expanding your marketing efforts.

So, focusing on generating more website visitors is why I create a triangle diagram for my Internet Marketing Clients to simply explain an SMO strategy and show the interrelated aspects of SEO (at the top of the triangle), Blogging (on the bottom left) and Social Networking (on the bottom right) and the resulting benefit that should equate to more website traffic (in the middle of the triangle).

In my Small Business Coaching practice, creating a clear focus on driving more visitor traffic back to your website is why I set-up SMO campaigns. In my own case, using SMO strategies I have been able to increase the monthly visitors to my website by 500% in 6 months. I work with my Internet Marketing Clients to develop actions plans so that their SMO strategies integrate with their Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and or Search Engine Marketing (SEM) campaigns. Then we execute the SMO action plan by establishing or improving their social media accounts, blogging, adding RSS feeds, pursuing ethical link building, social bookmarking and launching viral marketing strategies. Finally, we evaluate the SMO results monthly to monitor the Return On Investment (ROI) and to identify areas of improvement.

* According to Wikipedia, Rohit Bhargava was credited with inventing the term SMO. His original six rules for conducting Social Media Optimization are:

1. Increase your linkability

2. Make tagging and bookmarking easy

3. Reward inbound links

4. Help your content travel

5. Encourage the mashup

6. Get communities connected

(AP) ? Emergency workers with flashlights searched the smoldering wreckage of a passenger jet carrying 127 people that crashed into a muddy wheat field Friday while trying to land in a violent thunderstorm at Islamabad’s main airport.

The government said there appeared to be no survivors in the crash of the Boeing 737-200 near Benazir Bhutto International Airport ? the second major air disaster in the Pakistani capital in less than two years.

Sobbing relatives of those aboard the Bhoja Air flight from Karachi to Islamabad rushed to airports in both cities for news of their loved ones.

One rescue official asked residents to bring sheets to cover the remains of the dead, and smashed seats and other wreckage was spread over a wide area near the airport, along with clothing and jewelry belonging to passengers.

Bhoja Air, a domestic carrier that has just four planes, only resumed operations last month after suspending them in 2001 due to financial difficulties.

Bhoja administrative director Javed Ishaq told reporters and relatives of those on board that the jet was in good condition and was brought down by “heavy winds.”

“The aircraft was in good shape. This came from God,” said Ishaq, speaking at the airport in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city. As he spoke, relatives of those aboard who had come to the airport jeered him and demanded to be flown to Islamabad to collect the bodies of their loved ones.

The plane had been given clearance to land, said an air traffic controller who did not give his name because he was not authorized to speak to the media. A violent thunderstorm was lashing Islamabad at the time of the crash, about 6:40 p.m. local time.

“It was really bad weather for a flight,” said navy Capt. Arshad Mahmood, who lives near the crash site. “The pilot was forced to move down to avoid clouds that were generating the lightning and thunder.”

Islamabad police chief Bani Yameen said nobody on the ground was reported killed, “but apparently all on board perished.” Civil aviation officials also said survivors were highly unlikely, according to Defense Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar.

“My brother’s wife was on board this flight,” said Naveed Khan. “We pray for the departed souls. What else can we do now?”

TV footage showed wreckage that included parts of what looked like an engine and a wing against the wall of a small building. Rescuers worked in the dark, with many using flashlights as they combed the area. Fleets of ambulances arrived later, their lights flashing in the gloom.

Several farmers threshing wheat in the field nearby said they saw the aircraft burst into flames when it hit the ground.

“The flames leapt up like they were touching the sky,” said Mohammad Zubair.

The army declared an emergency and cordoned off the crash site.

“I saw nothing but body parts and twisted metal on the ground when I reached the scene,” said resident named Mustafa, who did not identify himself further.

He said residents collected the remains of the dead “and bundled them in cloth sheets like we collect grain.”

In a statement, the Boeing Co. extended its condolences to the families of the victims and offered technical assistance to Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority in investigating the crash.

The last major plane crash in the country ? and Pakistan’s worst ? occurred in July 2010 when an Airbus A321 aircraft operated by domestic carrier Airblue crashed into the hills overlooking Islamabad, killing all 152 people aboard. A government investigation blamed the pilot for veering off course amid stormy weather.

Bhoja Air started domestic operations in Pakistan in 1993 and eventually expanded to international flights to the United Arab Emirates in 1998. The company suspended operations in 2001 due to financial difficulties but resumed them in 2012.

Report: Arjen Robben to stay at Bayern

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:15 a.m. ET April 20, 2012

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -Arjen Robben has turned down an offer from Juventus and will stay at Bayern Munich despite a dispute with fellow star Franck Ribery, according to a media report Friday.

Robben declined the Italian offer with a text message, Bild newspaper said, and printed what it said was its content.

“It’s a great honor when a great club like Juventus is interested. But I have no interest at the moment,” Bild quoted the message as saying.

Bild said Juventus had offered Robben a three-year contract with an annual salary of ?5 million ($6.54 million).

Robben’s contract with Bayern expires at the end of the next season. Robben said in January that an extension was a “formality” but he still has to sign a new deal. The Netherlands winger was upset after being benched for a few games by coach Jupp Heynckes.

Bild’s sister publication, the weekly Sport Bild, reported that Robben and Ribery were involved in a furious dressing room argument after the 2-1 win over Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League semifinal this week.

The two stars may have even come to blows, the report said. The argument was over who should have taken a free kick shortly before halftime. Robben pulled Ribery back to allow Toni Kroos to take the shot.

Bayern players had to step in to separate the two, the report said. Both stars had to report to the club officials and the dispute was settled in a team meeting, Sport Bild said.

Bayern has refused to comment.

“What happens in the dressing room remains in the dressing room. We are not saying anything about it,” Bayern’s media director Markus Hoerwick said.

Qbo goes legit, now up for pre-order on maker’s site

Image

Graduation day is always tough on parents. So, you’ll have to forgive the growing pains experienced by TheCorpora, whose six years in development labor of cybernetic love, Qbo, is now ready for mass consumption. To make this ever-evolving, endearing bot on wheels easily accessible, the team’s divvied up its commercial wares into two distinct offerings: Basic and Complete. For the soldering prone among you, that former kit comes with a chassis, plastic coverings and an array of the cutesy android’s mechanic guts, all at your disposal for assembly. Devs less interested in getting their hands dirty and more concerned with coding can opt-in for the fuller set in either Pro or Lite versions, replete with a fully constructed unit and differing only in the variety of motherboard and CPU configuration used. The outfit’s accepting pre-orders on its site now, with the base model running about 500 Euros (about $656) and the higher end packages emptying wallets at 1,700 Euros (about $2,230) and 2,300 Euros (about $3,017) apiece. Those are certainly hefty investments for the at-home hobbyist, but can you really put a price on synthetic love? We didn’t think so.

Rohee and Felix in verbal showdown over missing police radio set

A heated verbal exchange erupted in the National Assembly on Monday between Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee and Former Police Commissioner-turned Parliamentarian Winston Felix over a police Communications radio, which went missing when Felix headed the Force.

Inews Guyana first reported on Sunday that Rohee accused the former top cop of still having the Very High Frequency (VHF) radio set in his possession despite , leaving the police force more that 5 years ago.

But Felix subsequently denied these allegations and the two clashed in the National Assembly over the missing equipment.

During Monday?s exchange, Felix disputed Rohee?s argument that he is in possession of the communications set and challenged the minister to conduct a search on his property.

However Rohee asked that the equipment be handed over to avoid a search.

Canonical’s AWSOME API bridges OpenStack and Amazon clouds, Ubuntu has its head in both

Canonical's AWESOME API bridges OpenStack and Amazon clouds, Ubuntu has its head in both

New features and services that improve Canonical’s latest version of Ubuntu seem to keep rolling in. The latest addition being the announcement of its AWSOME proxy service. No, that’s not us getting over excited about it, that stands for Any Web Service Over Me, and it includes APIs that smooth the transition to OpenStack from Amazon cloud services. Although not open source, Amazon’s Web Service has such a large market share, that Canonical clearly want to make integrating with it as smooth as possible. The AWSOME proxy will only provide basic functionality for the AWS side of things, with users still encouraged to adopt the OpenStack infrastructure for deeper capabilities. Still, if you’re currently working with Bezos’ platform, and this was the last barrier to hopping aboard the Precise Pangolin ship, you’re in luck.
